sensemaking & surrender

We exhaust ourselves trying to architect a logical defense against suffering, yet liberation often arrives the moment we simply stop trying to make sense.

The Limits of Logic

The mind approaches suffering the way an engineer approaches a structural problem. Given enough clarity about causes, enough precision in the diagnosis, enough logical architecture, surely the suffering can be managed, reduced, or at minimum explained into something bearable. So we build: frameworks of meaning, narratives of cause and effect, philosophies of why this pain belongs here and what it is supposed to teach us.

The exhaustion this produces is not incidental. The logical defense demands constant maintenance, because suffering keeps exceeding it. Every new wave of grief or fear or humiliation finds a gap in the architecture and enters there, and so the structure must be rebuilt, reinforced, extended. The project of making sense is never quite finished because suffering is not cooperating with the scheme.

What is strange (and hard to trust) is what sometimes happens when the project is abandoned. Not when we get tired and take a break, meaning to return, but in those moments when the grip actually releases: when we stop trying to figure out what the pain means, why it came, or how to fit it into a story where it makes sense. Something loosens. The suffering does not necessarily end, but the additional suffering of trying to defeat it with thought can stop, and that secondary weight turns out to have been heavier than what was beneath it.

This does not recommend the permanent abandonment of understanding. Logic applied to suffering is sometimes exactly what is needed: when the pain has a cause that can be named and addressed, when sensemaking opens rather than closes. What it names is a more specific failure mode: the point at which the drive to make sense has become its own source of suffering, so entangled with the original pain that releasing the architecture might be the very thing the architecture was supposed to do all along.

Where has the architecture meant to protect you from suffering become the structure the suffering is hiding inside?
